Sam’s Waterside
3 Kingham Avenue (Bradshaw Yard), Brentford TW8 8GP
(approach on the left of Morrisons)
Few of us can be unaware of Sam’s spectacular arrival in Brentford.
A lot has clearly been invested in this enterprise: the interior is tastefully plush and welcoming, the staff knowledgeable and enthusiastic. There’s a good choice of seating, at open tables, banquettes and around the large island bar. There are big south and east facing windows that will open in summer on to a generous outdoor eating area, overlooking the cleaned-up and ironically named Workhouse Dock.
Ironic, because Sam’s prices are not for the poor (or faint-hearted) – the gentrification of Brentford proceeds apace… Happily, the food is terrific. It’s modern European, cleverly and proudly incorporating some excellent British ingredients, including a good range of fish and shellfish.
Main courses go from £18 (burger or veg. curry) to £39 (ribeye steak & chips).
There are tasty vegetarian options. Starters and desserts are clever twists on classics.
Weekday set lunch is more affordable, though the food choice is limited: £23.50 for two courses, £25.50 for three.
The well-chosen wine range is cleverly offered with half-bottle carafes.
